Employers interviewed for the Navigator project indicated that volunteer experience is highly valued and in some cases may be viewed as transferable work experience. Occasionally, long-term volunteering can also lead to employment within the organization. One particular training provider who contributed interviews to the Healthcare Navigator project indicated that volunteer experience is vital for success in the healthcare occupations--and particularly important for individuals transitioning to healthcare from other careers. Individuals interested in volunteering should seek out opportunities within healthcare organizations where they will interact with healthcare staff and a diverse patient population. Many organizations require a time commitment of 3-4 hours per week for a minimum of 3-12 months. Click the links to view volunteer opportunities.
